Keeping vegan cooking simple

If you had run into Iosune Robles a decade ago, you would probably have found her thinking hard about what she was cooking for herself every day.

That’s because a close relative had been diagnosed with cancer, pushing her (and her entire family) to really think about what they were putting into their bodies with each meal.

As a matter of fact, Iosune had always been interested in healthy food. Her grandfather was “practically a vegetarian” (long before it was considered to be trendy). But now, the stakes were higher.

And that search for a healthier diet, alongside her partner, Alberto Aragón, led them both to look for recipes that were plant-based, ones that they could make right at home.

But they ran into a problem very quickly: there just weren’t that many vegan recipes available, let alone much in Spanish, their native language.

That’s when they decided to do something about it.

So, from their small apartment in Spain back in 2013, they embarked on a mission to fill that gap for themselves, their family, and anyone else who wanted the same. That’s when they launched Danza de Fogones, a Spanish vegan blog, and started sharing what they were learning in their very own kitchen.

The project was perfect for them. Iosune loved cooking and writing; Alberto leaned into his fondness for photography and the technical side of running a site. Neither of them had any kind of formal culinary training, however, so they taught themselves everything, from cooking basics to SEO to web development.

Many late nights and weekends later, they earned themselves a loyal Spanish audience, prompting another question to come up: what about all those non-Spanish speakers?

The answer came in the form of “launching Simple Vegan Blog in January 2014,” they explained. “Our goal was to share everyday vegan recipes in English this time, so that even more people could cook them.”

The name was deliberate too: for the husband and wife duo, simple isn’t just marketing; it’s a promise.

“We chose ‘Simple Vegan Blog’ because we wanted the name to reflect this promise,” says Iosune. “Our mission is to show that plant-based eating can be delicious, it can be affordable, and it can be made with everyday ingredients.”

And from that simple promise a successful business was born. These days, readers can turn to Simple Vegan Blog for recipes that make vegan cooking feel doable with recipes like General Tso’s Tofu, vegan Jambalaya, and tofu stir fry.

These are the types of recipes that their community enjoys the most: familiar flavors paired with step-by-step guidance and accessible ingredients — everything folks need to start their vegan journey, to take the stress out of plant-based cooking.

The business behind simple recipes

At first, Simple Vegan Blog was supposed to be just this side project for the two of them; they’d spend some of their free time, appease some of their curiosity, and, of course, use up a lot of tofu.

All the costs (hosting fees, software, camera gear, and yes, all that tofu) came out of their own pockets. That worked for a while… but as traffic grew, so did the costs.

And they knew from the start that they did not want a paywall between their recipes and the people who wanted them.

“For us, it was a no-brainer,” says Iosune. “We believed that our simple vegan recipes should be available to everyone, no matter where they live, and it shouldn’t depend on whether they could afford a subscription either.”

That, of course, led them to the doorstep of the ad-supported business model. In the beginning, they turned to Google AdSense, the easiest way (in their words) to prove that the blog could actually support itself.

And that first bit of ad income, however modest, was important: it showed that the site had real potential!

Then, as their audience started to span across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and more, they graduated to working with professionals like Raptive, a Google Certified Publishing Partner.

Fast forward to today, and the couple lets Raptive handle practically everything when it comes to their site’s ad monetization, freeing Iosune and Alberto to remain focused on the work they care most about: developing the recipes themselves, photographing them beautifully, and letting their readers try them all out for free.

By 2016, the engine of ad revenue running their site was strong enough to let them take the plunge, and finally turn Simple Vegan Blog into a full-time job.

A simple formula for long-term freedom (and health)

Today, Simple Vegan Blog reaches a large community of people who want plant-based recipes they can prepare right at home themselves. Many are cooking for families, often juggling budgets, and just trying to eat in a way that fits their values.

Ad revenue is what lets Iosune and Alberto show up for that community — their community.

“Ad revenue was a game changer for Simple Vegan Blog turning it into a sustainable business for sustainable eating,” they say. “It gives us the steady income we need to live off, while also making it possible for us to reinvest into the content itself, all while keeping our recipes 100% free for readers.”

Over the years, they’ve also chosen to keep the team small; just the two of them, with Iosune leading the recipes and Alberto running point on photography and IT. The money they make from ads has let them bring in additional help whenever they need it, especially advanced technical support.

Meanwhile, their readers write in with all kinds of heartwarming stories. Some talk about how Simple Vegan Blog gave them easy meals during a health crisis. Others say that recipes like that vegan Jambalaya or General Tso’s Tofu have finally managed to convince one skeptical family member or two that vegan food can indeed be satisfying.

“It’s incredibly moving to hear that our recipes helped someone cook during an illness, or gave them the confidence to cook vegan for their loved ones.”

On the home front, the ad-supported model has allowed them to travel while working remotely, and now, as parents, it’s given them something even more precious: time with their kids.

And since their site makes steady income from ads, they don’t have to stress out when they want to spend an afternoon at the playground as a family, instead of in the kitchen or at the computer.

As they look to the future, Iosune and Alberto have set some lofty goals for the site.

“First, we want to keep building our recipe catalog until Simple Vegan Blog is the ultimate resource our readers can trust for anything they want to cook,” they exclaim. “We want our community to be able to find a simple and delicious vegan version of any dish they search for.”

At the same time, they’re focused on preserving the lifestyle that this business has made possible: not just working for themselves, but also helping others eat in a way that they want, while being present for their kids.

And to anyone intimidated by vegan cooking, Iosune has some words for encouragement: “don’t try to master everything at once. Start simple and veganize the foods you already love, like your favorite pasta, chili, or sandwich, and just swap the animal products for plant-based ones. Once you see how easy those swaps can be, you’ll feel ready to try more.”

That philosophy — start simple, and build from there — sits at the heart of Simple Vegan Blog, and the way they think about access.

The recipes may be free, but behind each one are the ads that help to sustain it, equal parts Google tech, Raptive expertise, and publisher passion.
